The Collegian won five awards in four different categories at the Ohio Newspaper Association’s annual Collegiate Newspaper and Website Competition.

Awards were handed out on Feb. 11 at the ONA annual convention.

“Five awards is the most The Collegian has ever won in one year at ONA,” said Collegian adviser Matt Tullis. “I’m incredibly proud of the staff. It’s hard to put out a newspaper every week, let alone a newspaper of the quality students at AU put out.”

Managing editor Zack Lemon won first place for best in-depth reporting for his story on the controversial recommendations former president Fred Finks and former provost Frank Pettigrew made to the Board of Trustees.

Former managing editor Chris Bils won third place for best in-depth reporting for his story looking at the cutting of the men’s soccer team, and how it actually cost the university money, not saved it.

The newspaper also won second place for best news coverage, third place for best sports coverage, and third place for best website.

The Collegian was in Division B, which consisted of college newspapers that publish three times or less a week.

The five awards were the third-most for any non-daily college newspaper in the state, trailing the Cedars at Cedarville University and the Independent Collegian at the University of Toledo.
