Track team stretching their legs in South Carolina

The track and field team for AU had their latest meet in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational.

There were 12 top five finishes for the Eagles, seven from the women and five from the men.

“(The assistant coaching staff) mutually agreed that the trip was a productive venture,” said assistant coach Alan Dunson. “While it is very early for our student-athletes to expect marquee performances, given the immediate conclusion of the 2015 Indoor NCAA Championships, we were still pleased with how many were able to allow a heated environment encourage strong season openers.”

There was one first place finish, which came from freshman Haley Gregory in the women’s 200 meter dash. 

Gregory finished with a time of 26.15 seconds. 

Sophomore Shelby Jordan also placed in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.34, good enough for fourth.

The women also had three runners finish in the top five in the 400 meter dash. Sophomore Sam Birchall finished second with a time of 1:02.48, sophomore Tiarra Kick finished fourth in 1:02.60 and senior Mary Hitchcock came in fifth with a time of 1:03.80.

For the men, freshman Halen Witcher ran a 50.37 in the 400 meter dash for fifth and junior Columbus Millet finished in 52.26 for eighth.

Sophomore William Robinson finished second in the 400 meter hurdles in 57.19 seconds and Senior Elijha Owens was third in the 110 hurdles with 14.21 seconds.

The men’s 400 meter relay, which consisted of junior Brandon Freeman, senior Eric Thompkins, Owens and Witcher, ended up in sixth. They ran with a time of 41.98 seconds. 

In the men’s long jump, sophomore Damani Barnes came in second, jumping 21 feet 2.5 inches. Sophomore Jamie Hence received fifth with 20 feet 7.25 inches and junior Max Ertle got seventh with 19 feet 6.75 inches.

In the women’s long jump, sophomore Marlecia Holston placed fourth with 16 feet and 4.5 inches and freshman Abigail Shafer finished eighth with 16 feet and half an inch. Freshman Hannah Bartlome tied for fourth in the high jump with a 1.5 meter mark.

Next up on the team’s schedule is the Wooster Invitational on Friday.
