Once again, the women’s softball team competes against Ohio’s unpredictable weather conditions, having their first doubleheader after Florida cancelled due to the rain.

On the bright side, the women hold a record of 11-1, dominating throughout their spring break trip to Clermont, Fla.

Coach Sheilah Gulas said she was expecting the girls to have a successful trip, but did not think the team would leave Florida with the record they did.

“I feel there is something special about this team,” said Gulas. “They have great experience, great characters, and awesome work ethic.  They know what it takes to be a winner and they have set high goals and have high standards.”

Now that they are off to such successful start, Gulas knows they just need to continue to get better and not stay satisfied with where they are now in hopes to continue to obtain more wins in the GLIAC.

“Energy is probably through he roof,” said Senior McKenna Galloway. “I would say that our focus and our aggressiveness is more than I’ve experienced in my career.”

One of the most exciting moments for the team in Florida came with a win against Mary.

The victory came courtesy of a two-out solo home run from junior Kayla Prokopakis in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ashland had the lead of 5-0 after two innings and 6-1 after three, although Mary rallied to tie the game at 6, allowing for Prokopakis to be the hero of the game as she stepped up to the plate.

“We were going into he last inning with two outs and she came up and hit a home run,” said Gulas.  “It was really exciting because that allowed us to start another streak. We has lost the game before so it was our opportunity to start another win streak.”

The only team AU fell too was Lewis.  The Eagles split a doubleheader with them winning 6-0 then losing 7-5.

The Eagle’s five errors in game two resulted in Lewis scoring three of their runs.

Now that the Eagles are back home, they are ready to face the teams in their conference and have goal of dominating in the GLIAC this season.

“There have been some teams in the GLIAC that have been thornes in our side over the years, and I know that some of the players are keying into those games,” said Gulas. “But we need to win the games against the teams that have beat us in the past.”

Despite having the record of 11-1, the team is refusing to settle, knowing they will have to give their all in the conference.

“Every time we come into a game it’s a fight,” said Junior Jen Moore. “There is no way that we are going to sit down and roll over.  That doesn’t happen here at AU.”

The team’s time in Florida was not all serious.  Assistand coach Shannon Schaub gave the girls the goal of winning six games in a row. If they achieved this goal, the team got to bring home two hermit crabs as a team pets.

“We had one player carry the cage in and I guess they checked it, but you know, nothing was in there,” said Gulas. “But we hid them in an empty water bottle and once we got through security we put them back in the cage.  I mean, thank God we weren’t arrested, or else I might still be in Florida.”

The Eagle’s are scheduled to play their first home doubleheader on Saturday against Ohio Dominican.
