The track and field team continues to show their dominance, with this week at the Walsh Invitational being another example. There were a total of 12 events the Eagles won, with the men and women winning six events each.

One aspect that AU has excelled in so far is the throwing events.

Five of the first place finishes for Ashland this weekend were in throwing events, with many other throwers placing high too.

For the men, sophomore Jason Zahn won the shot put with a throw of 16.57 meters.

Senior Zac Ball had the best hammer throw with a 65.88-meter distance and senior Sam Shaffer won the javelin, throwing it 57.04 meters.

One the women’s side, senior Shatora Lewis won the discus with a 48.23-meter throw and junior Jamie Sindeler had the best shot put distance with 15.59 meters.

The Ashland women may not have won the hammer throw, but they dominated the event with four finishing in the top five.

Senior Kim Habegger was the runner-up with a 59.99 meter toss, senior Jessica Bridenthal was third with a throw of 57.53 meters, sophomore Megan Tomei’s throw went 56.42 meters for fourth and Lewis’s best throw went 54.88 meter to finish fifth.

“The throwers had a great weekend,” said head coach Jud Logan.”They rise to the occasion each week because of the intense intra-team competition they compete against every day in practice. We are not firing on all cylinders with this group, but I’m confident, we will be shortly.”

Junior Elijha Owens won the 400 meter dash for the men with a time of 47.69 seconds and sophomore Aubrey Jordan won the 1500 meter run in just over four minutes, four minutes and 93 hundredths of a second to be exact.

Senior Waquiem Comar won the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 53.38 seconds to round of the first place finishes on the men’s side.

Senior Jennifer Foster had the best high jump in the women’s competition with a 1.74-meter finish. In the pole vault, two members from AU ended up tying for first.

Both Foster and junior Meghan Cunningham had a top vault of 3.51 meters.

Winning the 200-meter dash was freshman Irene Skinnner.

Skinner’s time was 25.07 seconds. Freshman Haley Gregory was the winner of the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.03 seconds.

The Eagles will host next meet, which is the team’s only home campaign, the Ashland Alumni Open.

The meet will begin on Friday at 11:00 a.m. and will finish on Saturday with a start of 10:00 a.m. Logan is excited for the team to have the chance to perform at home.

“The Alumni meet will be a great showcase for our team to compete in front of a home crowd,” said Logan. “We certainly invite family and friends and hopefully the student body that might be curious what the number one team in the country looks like in action.”
