The Ashland University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams bounced back from last Friday’s loss at Edinboro with two wins over Grove City College in Saturday’s home opener at Messerly Natatorium.
The Eagle women defeated Grove City 169-131, while the men notched a 154-137 victory. The wins also marked the first dual victories for head coach Sydney Laughlin, who is in her first year of coaching.
At Edinboro, Ashland fell by scores of 130-85 (women) and 117-103 (men) but still managed six individual or relay wins. Junior Colin Pham led the men with a win in the 200-yard backstroke and helped the 400 freestyle relay team of junior Evan Kemp and freshmen Lincoln Shirley and Trei Durstine finish first with a time of 3:13.35. Senior Jason Basile also took the men’s 1,000 freestyle, while the women’s 400 freestyle relay team of Juliana Pignato, Katelyn Claugus, Colleen Cox and Payton O’Toole won in 3:43.50.
Against Grove City, O’Toole led the women with four wins, containing two individuals (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and two as part of winning relay teams. Sophomore Yasmim Tomita tallied wins in both the 100 and 200 backstroke.
On the diving side, senior Joey Lenczyk and junior Riley Hunt swept the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events, adding on to their success from the Edinboro meet. Pham and Kemp paced the men’s squad in swimming events, while senior Nick Girz added a win in the 100 breaststroke.
Ashland will remain at home to face Malone on Friday (Oct. 31) at 5 p.m.
