On Wednesday, Sept. 17 Isabel Conklin, better known as Belly, chose Conrad Fisher over Jeremiah Fisher after three long and excruciating seasons of back-and-forth between the two brothers.
The Summer I Turned Pretty follows main character, Belly, as she struggles with deciding between two brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah. As the show neared the end a couple of weeks ago Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah began fighting between which brother was the better option … and to be honest, if you would ask me – neither.
Yes, at a certain point I was screaming “Team Jeremiah,” and defending him down; consequently, this season led me to be Team Conrad after they forced my hand (newsflash Jenny Han, you shouldn’t have to ruin a character to make the other more likeable). But both brothers were terrible options, not because of them as characters, but because of Belly herself.
During the first half of the season Belly became insufferable, and not fully because of herself. I’m all for women’s rights and wrongs; however, her engagement with Jeremiah was such a rash decision. She was insistent that she got married at Cousins Beach as soon as possible. Belly was ready to risk her relationship with her family over a decision that came out of, let’s face it, being cheated on.
Her mother, Laurel, wasn’t against marriage (fully), but showed a lot of resistance as Belly was on track to graduate the upcoming academic year. Her entire point was waiting a few more months to make it forever.
As expected, the wedding was called off on the day of; thus, everyone in Belly’s life, including herself, wasted their time advocating for a wedding that didn’t even start. The events after this made Belly’s character more digestible.
Without the Fisher brothers I found myself enjoying Belly more. It’s like without them she had actual personality. After the engagement was called off, she ran off to Paris on a whim and decided to stay. Belly made an amazing group of friends and even a little Paris fling. At this moment I, and many other fans, realized we didn’t really know Belly outside of the Fisher brothers.
Belly became Isabel in Paris, a girl who was suddenly self-sufficient, worked in a bar, and tried new things such as riding a scooter. The Belly we knew in Cousins wouldn’t have done any of those things.
But let’s skip to the important part – her final choice.
Although I’m arguing that Belly is better off alone, I constantly said throughout the season the following: “I need her to choose a man.”
A man was chosen – Conrad Fisher. Not like we saw that one coming (sarcasm).
Despite him not being my first choice, it was perfect how Jenny Han set it up. She really strung us along in suspense until the very end. For a second there, me and my girls thought Belly would choose herself; however, she ran to Conrad as “Out Of The Woods” by Taylor Swift played. Her, (and her bob) ran through the streets of Paris, onto a train, and she stated the following heartfelt confession: “Conrad, I choose you of my own free will. If there are infinite words, every version of me chooses you in every one of them.”
I screamed.
In the end, it’s revealed Belly didn’t go back to Cousins that summer; but she states she eventually did, and we get the beautiful final shot of Belly and Conrad at the summer house.
The viewers can assume that they both live in the summer house together living a happy life.
That is, until we get the movie coming as early as 2027.
Until then, long live Bonrad.
