The Ashland University volleyball team headed to St. Augustine, Fl. for the Flagler Invitational, which started on Sept. 11.
The Eagles started their trip against the hosts. The Flagler University Saints fell to the Eagles 3-1. Sophomore Sophia Samonek led the team in kills with 14 in the match. Freshman Jenna Shedden followed closely behind with 13.
Junior Abbey Queen led the team in digs with 25. Junior Ravin Morgan had 11 of the teams 30 blocks. The Eagles held the Saints to a .144 hitting percentage which contributed to their win on Thursday night.
Sept. 12 brought the first loss of the season for the Eagles. They fell short to Newberry College in four sets.
Queen once again led the team in digs with 36 on the match. It was the third most single match digs in Ashland history. Shedden led the team in kills with 16. Junior setter Marin Dixon also had 42 assists throughout the match.
The Eagles then split on their last day of competition in Florida. In their third game, they got swept by Embry-Riddle. They kept the last set alive, but ultimately fell short, with the last set being 29-27. Queen had 20 digs and four assists. Sophomore Myia Etzler had eight kills and three blocks, leading the team in blocks through the match.
The Eagles then rounded out the invitational, sweeping the Lenior-Rhyne Eagles. Shedden led the Ashland Eagles with nine kills and three blocks. Morgan had six kills and led the team with four blocks. Weickert had 25 assists.
Four Eagles hit double digits for digs in the match: Queen (14), sophomore Kaylee Davis (13), freshman Sydney Weickert (13), and senior Macey McNamara (11). Weickert had 19 assists throughout the match.
The Eagles return to Sherrill Hudson Court at Kate’s Gymnasium on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. to take on the Lake Erie Storm in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup.
