On Thursday, April 10 the Ashland University Womens’ lacrosse team beat the Walsh Cavaliers ,19-10, in a game for the top spot in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
Before this game, the Eagles had never beaten the Cavaliers. Ashland was 0-6 all-time against Walsh. After this win, Ashland now has an overall record of 9-5 and GMAC record of 5-0. Walsh now sits at an overall record of 7-8 and a G-MAC record of 5-1.
Numerous Eagles had standout performances this game. Two attackers/midfielders, junior Lauren Hinders and freshman Nataley Blackburn, were able to keep Walsh’s offense at bay throughout the game. Junior attacker Rachel Crumbacher scored a total of nine points with four goals and five assists, while junior attacker Ashley Fisher scored four goals and an assist for five points. Junior goalkeeper Annie Duncan made seven saves during the game.
Two additional standout Eagles are freshman attacker Tori Wanat and sophomore midfielder Lily Cain. Wanat scored six goals and three assists for a total of nine points, while also having three ground balls and eighteen draw controls. Cain was injured last year and unable to play against Walsh. This year, she came back from her injury strong, scoring one goal, one assist and one forced turnover.
There were many turnovers in this game. Ashland had 25 turnovers while Walsh had 23. There were a total of 61 shots in the game, AU having 32 and Walsh having 29.
The Eagles will next take on the Northwood Timberwolves on Wednesday April 16.
