The Ashland University Track and Field team dispersed Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13 to take on three different meets, earning more provisional marks along the way for the Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Division II Championships on May 22-24 in Pueblo, Colo.
The first group went to. Cleveland, Tenn. for the Lee Fast Break Athletics Invitational from April 11-12.
Opening the weekend on Friday by breaking an almost 30-year-old school record was senior Lily Dowdell. She placed fifth in the women’s 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:29.55, earning herself a new provisional mark as well. The previous record was held by Kelly Kish, who ran a 17:10.64 in May of 1995.
Also earning a new provo mark in Tenn. was junior Nate Slater. Slater placed third in the men’s 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:46.46.
Also breaking records was sophomore Brianna Chenevey. She won the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 24.07 and set a new track record.
At the Fast Break Invitational on Saturday, April 12, Slater earned yet another provo mark, this time in the men’s 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.02, earning himself second place.
Junior Jade Avance set a new track record in the women’s 800-meter run, placing first with a time of 2:08.34.
The women’s 4×400-meter relay set a new track record with a time of 3:50.92. The squad consisted of Chenevey, freshman Olivia Saylor, senior Mia Gardner and Avance.
The men’s 4×400-meter relay also set a new track record with a time of 3:11.87. The quad consisted of senior Colin Hunkele, sophomore Colton Thress and seniors Ethan Schuster and Jacob Pielech.
The women’s 4×100-meter relay placed first with a time of 46.89. The squad consisted of sophomore Odessa Smith, Chenevey, senior Greta Barker and sophomore Hailey Rios.
Pielech also placed first in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 48.08.
On Saturday, April 12, another squad took on the Southside Power & Fitness Invitational in Hickory, N.C.
Assistant coach T.J. Skinner won the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.13.
Senior Wyatt Cory earned a new provo mark as well in the men’s decathlon, scoring 6,499 points and placing second in the event.
A third group of athletes headed to Mount Union for the John Homon Open.
Fifth-year Aniya Seward earned a new provo mark and first place in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.68.
Sophomore Leslie Pollock won the women’s hammer throw and improved her provo mark in the process, throwing 55.64 meters.
Also finishing first was senior Noah Wood in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 48.74.
Senior Kelsey Kinsley won the women’s shot put, throwing 13.87 meters.
Sophomore Alex Eggleston won the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.85.
Next up the Eagles will travel to Charlottesville, Va. For the Virginia Challenge from April 18-19.
