The Ashland University baseball team took on the Gannon Golden Knights on Wednesday. April 9 in a nonconference double-header matchup.
The Eagles entered the day with a 23-8 record while the Knights came in with a 12-16 record on the year.
In the first game, the Eagles struck first in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by freshman Gage Weaver to take a 1-0 lead. Then in the top of the third, the Knights were able to take over the lead 3-1 on two RBI singles and a fielder’s choice.
The Eagles came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs batted in on a double by junior Collin Overholt which tied the game at three. They kept the ball rolling with an RBI single and a walk with the bases loaded to bring in two more runs. The Eagles led the Knights 5-3 heading into the fifth inning.
The Eagles would then score two more runs in the fifth inning which included Overholt launching a solo home run for his fifth of the season. The Eagles won game one by a score of 7-3 for win number 24 on the year
Game two was kicked off with an RBI single by Weaver in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The next run wouldn’t be scored until the fourth inning by freshman Sean Krueckeberg, on an RBI single. Then another run was scored by the Eagles in the fifth along with one more in the sixth by Krueckeberg again which would help to put the Knights away 4-0.
The most impressive part of the win was sophomore Griffin Ailes, who pitched a three-hit shutout while obtaining three strikeouts and no walks. The Eagles were also able to outhit the Knights 14-3 in game two on their way to the win.
The Eagles improved to 25-8 overall and 14-2 in conference play while having won eight in a row. The Eagles next series will be against the Tiffin Dragons for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup with game one on Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m.
