The Ashland University Eagles baseball team took the field on Tuesday, April 1 against the Ohio Dominican University (ODU) Panthers for a non-conference matchup. The Eagles entered the game having won 12 of their last 14 games and looking to make it 13.
ODU got off to a fast start with one run off an RBI double in the first inning and one run in the second on a bases loaded single. Ashland wouldn’t let their deficit last long though, as the Eagles would rip off four runs on only one hit in the third inning, two of those runs coming off of walks with the bases loaded. The Panthers wanted in on some of that action, so they went ahead and scored four of their own in the fourth inning, putting their lead at 7-4 heading into the fifth.
Junior shortstop, Collin Overholt, hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to put the Eagles within two runs. Then, just moments later, senior third baseman, Jeremiah Cangelosi, would follow his lead and smash another ball out of the park in a two-run homerun in the seventh to put the score at seven a piece.
In the eighth inning, Ashland would take the lead with another Cangelosi RBI. Later in the inning, the Eagles would extend their lead to 10-7 on a 2-RBI double. Ashland would then start to pile up the runs with four straight runs on four straight batters. ODU wouldn’t score another run, and Ashland would get the win 14-7.
Graduate left fielder, Max Caron, finished the game going 3-4 with four runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Cangelosi helped lead the charge going 2-3 with two runs scored, four RBI’s and a homerun.
Ashland improves to 19-8 overall and 10-2 in conference play. They’ll come back home for a four-game conference series against the Findlay Oilers starting on Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m.
