On Wednesday, March 12 the Ashland University softball team took on a double hitter against the California (Pa.) Vulcans on home turf.
Game one began with the Vulcans scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning; however, the Eagles then scored once in the third inning on an RBI single from sophomore left fielder Delaney Maynard.
In addition to this, sophomore right fielder Maren Metikosh carried from Maynards momentum by scoring on an RBI single as well.
This gave the Eagles a confidence booster as they would then gain a big fifth inning as they scored seven runs.
These runs were accomplished as follows: Maynard collecting an RBI single again, sophomore catcher Delaney Keith with a run-scoring single, sophomore third baseman Sophia Martin launching a two-run home run, junior pitcher Delaney Lis hitting a solo homer and Maynard drove in two more runs with a single.
However, this game would need extra innings to settle the score. The Eagles would take charge by scoring five runs. These five runs would be supported by a three-run homerun by junior infielder Amanda Kolar.
The Vulcans failed to answer back in the eighth inning, allowing the Eagles to win with a score of 14-10.
In game two, Ashland kicked off the game scoring first. Martin’s RBI single and Keith’s RBI double accounted for two runs in the top of the first; on the other hand, the Vulcans came back and played four runs in the bottom of the first.
This didn’t stop the Eagles, Martin returned serving with a run-scoring double in the third: cutting the Eagles deficit to 4-3.
Leading the fourth for the Eagles was sophomore shortstop Sophia Smithnosky with a solo homerun to put the Eagles ahead 5-4.
The Eagles would win this back-and-forth contest, with a final score of 8-5 over the Vulcans.
The Eagles also ended the night making history. As they would score 32 runs in their last three games played, the program’s most in that span since March 28 through April 1 in 2023.
The Eagles now sit at 10-8 overall with their next match being their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) match against Lake Erie Storm on Tuesday, March 18 at 3 p.m. at Dev Millier Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex.
