Ashland University womens’ lacrosse team won 20-12 against Daemen University on Monday, March 10. This leaves the Eagles with a season record of 3-3 overall with no conference play.
Ashland started out the game strong, leading 9-0 in the first quarter. Daemen trailed close behind early in the fourth quarter, with the score being 13-11. The Eagles managed to hold their lead and scored seven more points for their winning final score of 20.
Ashland out-shot Daemen, with 37 shots to Daemen’s 25. The Eagles also forced 27 turnovers.
Several AU players had standout performances during this game. Sophomore attacker Ashley Drexler found four goals and one assist while junior attacker Rachel Crumbacher had two goals and three assists, leaving both with five points each. Finally, junior goalkeeper Annie Duncan who made five saves to add onto the team’s outstanding performance.
Freshman midfielder Tori Wanat had a career high with seven goals and eight total points. When asked about the game, Wanat said, “I think it was important for us to hustle back. They were on a run for a little bit there. It was important for us to stick together.”
Wanat appreciates how well her team worked together to come out of the game with a win. Lauren Smiko, head coach, felt similarly finding that, “as the game went on, they did a really nice job at maintaining composure, and kind of got out of a funk and took the game away.”
Up next for the Eagles, it’s another home match on Saturday, March 15 at Ferguson Field against the Grand Valley State Lakers beginning at 1 p.m.
