The Ashland University softball team traveled to Florida to compete in a series of spring games which began on Sunday, March 2 through Friday, March 7.
The Eagles opened their trip on Sunday facing the Edinboro University Flying Scots and the California (Pa) Vulcans.
The Eagles beat the Fighting Scots in a 5-2 decision where they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. With senior pitcher Cassidy Shaffer earning an RBI single and scoring off a wild pitch. While sophomore catcher Sophia Martin was able to steal home as well during the inning.
As the game concluded, Shaffer earned the win in the pitcher’s circle in a complete-game four-hitter.

Following this game the Eagles would find another win against the Vulcans in a 10-1 decision, with a mercy rule in five innings. The Eagles found the opportunity to score four times in the top of the first half where Shaffer gave another great performance for the Eagles.
Shaffer had two RBI off her one hit with having three at bats.
Joining Shaffer was senior first baseman Lily Rockwell where she found a three-run home run at the top of the first inning.
These games set the pace for the Eagles; however, they would open up the next day with a loss to the Grand Valley State Lakers in a 5-2 decision. Despite this loss the Eagles saw a 2-for-2 walk against the Lakers from sophomore left fielder Delaney Maynard.
The Eagles would find their groove again against the St. Cloud State Huskies in a 2-1 win.
The spring games would continue for the Eagles as they’d find the following wins against Dominican University (10-5) and Concordia-St. Paul (9-3).
They’d find a loss against Sioux Falls (7-6) then finally three consecutive losses to round out their trip against Bemidji State, Grand Valley State, and Concord University.
This allotted the Eagles splitting games finding five wins and five losses for their spring games trip.
The Eagles now sit at 8-8 overall with no conference games played so far this season.
The Eagles still have a long season to go where they’ll next travel to take on the California (PA) Vulcans on Wednesday, March 12 in a double header set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
