Football stays perfect after defeating Saginaw

Saginaw Valley brought the crowd of 4,551 to their feet at Wickes Stadium in University Center, Michigan when Brad Odeman Jr. connected with Marq Johnson to give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead with 7:28 left in the first quarter.

The Ashland University football team responded with 33 consecutive points, dominating time of possession and the game, on their way to a 33-7 trouncing of the host squad.

Sophomore quarterback Travis Tarnowski threw for 280 yards through the air and ran for a touchdown on the ground. The second year starter hooked up with ten receivers in the win.

The Eagle defense shutdown the SVSU offense after the first touchdown, holding the Cardinals to more punting yards, 183, than total yards, 163, in the game. AU held the ball for just under 42 minutes of the game, the highest number in the Lee Owens era. 

Tarnowski’s rushing TD pulled the Eagles even in the first quarter. Aiden Simenc’s first field goal of the game gave AU a 10-7 edge with 5:29 left until halftime. 

Jordan McCune’s one-yard touchdown plunge capped a ten-play, 67-yard drive and gave AU a ten-point halftime advantage.

The second half was the Aiden Simenc show. The redshirt sophomore kicker drilled three field goals in the second half, on his way to a four for four performance and being named the GLIAC special teams player of the week. 

Andrew Vaughn capped the scoring for AU with a three-yard touchdown plunge late in the fourth quarter to finish off the 33-7 victory. 

The Eagles have moved up to the number eight spot in the latest AFCA Coaches’ Poll. two of AU’s future opponents, Michigan Tech and Grand Valley State are also ranked in the poll. 

AU will look to pick up its seventh straight win and remain undefeated when the Hillsdale Chargers come to town to face the Eagles on homecoming weekend with the traveling trophy on the line.
