Ashland University’s wrestling team has made a habit of beating nationally ranked teams this season, and Feb. 7 night at Kate’s Gymnasium was no different.
The No. 21-ranked Eagles defeated No. 10 West Liberty on Friday in a scoring of 28-18 to improve to 10-2 in duals this season. This is the most single season wins since 2018-19 when they had 12. Of those 10 wins this winter, Ashland has earned six against teams in the Top 25 in the NCAA Division II.
Freshman Rylen Campbell got Ashland on the board at 133 pounds, improving to 17-14 this season after a pin in 2:38 over Caiden Harbert. Three Eagles then won consecutively during this meet.
Sophomore 149-pounder Hayden Kuhn who is 24-5 and won 19-2 technical fall over Anthony Wood.
Junior 157-pounder Evan Davis who is 3-4 and won 8-2 decision over Toby Abbott.
No. 5-ranked 165-pound junior Nate Barrett, who is 23-9 and is 16-0, won on a tech fall over Breagan Pearson. The Eagles finished off the win thanks to No. 9-ranked 197-pound senior Kaine Morris’ who is 22-9 and won 9-1 major decision over Luke Justice, and junior 285-pounder Wyatt Bailey’s who is 15-9 and won 19-3 om a tech fall over Vincent Parke.
The end of the regular season will be on Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. at Thomas More with Davenport.
