International Club hosts cookout and party
October 9, 2015
Last week was Ashland University’s International Education Week. The Global Education department and International Club worked together and held several entertaining events during the week. Students who came and had fun were from over five countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bangladeshi, Nepal, China, Japan and France.
“We normally have it in November, so toward the end of fall semester,” said Shelby Boatman, head of PR for the International Club, “but, we decided this year to have it in September so we can get the word out about our International group on campus, our students and our club as well.”
Although the International Education Week is over, there are more fascinating events happening in October, which International Club has been preparing for a while. All students, faculty and members of the Ashland community are welcome to take part in the events.
On Oct. 9, the club is going to have a cookout on the Quad at 5:30 p.m. and people can either have food and chat or play outside volleyball before the temperature drops lower. On Oct. 21, a student from East Timor is giving a speech at 3:00p.m.talking about her hometown at Eagle’s Landing. International Club considers this as an important opportunity for American students to learn about the life and culture of another country.
As for Halloween, International Club is taking a group of students to Mansfield Reformatory, which has been transformed to a haunted house for people to visit and experience scenes from some classic horror movies. Sign-up for the prison trip begins Wednesday, Oct. 7, and anyone who is interested in it may go to the Student Life office and fill out the sign up sheet. Details about this trip will be posted on campus next week.
“We are still working out the details of that. We are still working out the transportation, cost, and all the little logistics for it, so we will have a final decision with that next Tuesday at our meeting”, said Boatman.
Another exciting event is the Halloween Party starting at 9 p.m.at Redwood Hall on Oct. 31. People may have snacks, drinks and watch a movie together, and everyone is welcomed to wear a costume and join the costume contest.
