Ashland University’s Winter Celebration came into question at Student Senate on Feb. 4.
Dr. Rob Pool, VP of student affairs at AU, said there were 43 of the 305 eligible students who graduated last semester at the celebration.
“[The university] is spending more than $10,000 a year…to make sure it’s a wonderful event, but for 43 students, it’s under question right now,” said Pool.
Pool asked the senate to gather feedback from the student body on holding a Winter Celebration in the future.
Chair of Athletic Affairs, Evie Pryor, announced difficulties students are experiencing with obtaining housing accommodations.
“It’s actually easier for a transfer to get off campus than it is for somebody who’s already in school here,” Pryor said.
President Aidan Nayak said students should expect a positive experience with their housing on campus due to the costs.
Sophie Major, chair of Finances and Facilities, said improvements on campus are expensive and not always noticeable to students.
“To replace an elevator costs $800,000, and there’s a lot of elevators on this campus that are old and have to be replaced, so that’s just some perspective,” Major said.
Recently, AU tour guides found condoms and tampons opened in one of the parking lots.
David Maloney, Andrews Hall representative, said tour guides were asked to pick it up with gloves. It is unknown whether the tampons and condoms were used.
Dr. Pool said any biohazard materials should be cleaned up by facilities or safety services at AU.
Patricia Frank, director of Archer Library, visited this week and discussed an upcoming workshop on AI for students and webinars on the library’s online database.
Student Senate meets every Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. in the ABCD conference room on the second floor of the Hawkins-Conard Student Center at AU.
Meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
