The Ashland Women’s Basketball team went head-to-head with the Thomas More Saints on Saturday Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. in Kate’s Gymnasium in another Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) contest.
The day started off with Ashland honoring all the seniors for Senior Day. These seniors included guards Morgan Yoder and Lydia Sweeney alongside forwards Sarah Mckee, Hayley Smith and Zoe Miller.
The first quarter was quickly controlled by the Eagles as they obtained a double-digit lead at 14-4 after just 6:21. The quarter would end with an Ashland lead of 19-9 and Miller being the leading scorer with 11, outscoring Thomas More by herself.
The second quarter was fairly even through the first three minutes but then all of a sudden Ashland held the Saints scoreless for the next five minutes and ripped off a 19-0 run to go up 40-13. The Saints would find their footing more and outscore Ashland from that point until half, but they would still trail at the break, 46-23.
The entire second half was all the Eagles while the Saints stood no chance to make a comeback as they ended the third quarter down by 33, 63-30. With just over six minutes to play in the fourth, Head Coach Kari Pickens took out all the seniors and gave them a proper send off on Senior Day. The Eagles would lock up their 14th win in a row in a dominant 78-47 win.
Miller led the charge in scoring with 20 points including two three-pointers while adding six rebounds. She now moves to 20th place on AU’s all-time scoring list with 1,219 career points.
Smith also had a great day with 16 points and being one rebound away from a double-double with nine. She now moves to 17th in Eagle career scoring annals with 1,245 career points.
The Eagles will take on Malone, who is the first-place team in the G-MAC, in a battle for the first spot on Thursday Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
