The Ashland University’s Indoor Track team remained home this Saturday Jan. 25, breaking a few school records along the way.
The women’s 4×400 meter relay squad consisting of sophomore Brianna Cheveney, junior Montana Walker, junior Jade Avance, and senior Mia Gardner broke the school record with a time of 3:34.64. The previous record was 3:44.23, set back in March of 2005 at NCAA’s.
After breaking an eleven-year-old school record in the women’s 3,000-meter run last weekend at the Kent State Jud Logan Memorial meet, senior Lily Dowdell broke the school record in the women’s mile run with a time of 4:55.53. The previous record was held by Julie Haase and was set in May of 1993, with a time of 5:00.22. That was the oldest record in the women’s indoor track and field record book. Not only did she break the school record, but she also won the event and earned her provisional mark for nationals along the way.
Along with Dowdell, more Eagles achieved their provisional marks to attend the Indoor Track and Field nationals set to take place in Indianapolis, Indiana from March 13-15.
For the women’s team, Cheveney achieved her mark with a win in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 24.28.
Graduate student Alena Williams placed second in the women’s 60-meter dash and earned her provisional mark, running a time of 7.63.
For the men’s team, their 4×400 meter relay qualified and won the event with a new set of faces. The squad included senior Colin Hunkele, sophomore Brian Turner, junior Daylen Madison, and senior Jacob Pielech, running a time of 3:12.27.
Hunkele also qualified individually, placing second in the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 48.17.
Sophomore Matthew Noel placed second in the men’s high jump, while also earning a provisional mark, jumping 2.04 meters.
Continuing with their success at their home invitational, the following Eagles placed first in their respective events: Gardner in the women’s 300-meter dash with a time of 40.28; Pielech in the men’s 300-meter dash with a time of 34.52; sophomore Leslie Pollock in the women’s weight throw with a throw of 18.55 meters; sophomore Odessa Smith in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.78; sophomore Molly Winner in the women’s shot put with a throw of 14.37 meters; and sophomore Justin Richards in the men’s long jump with a jump of 6.90 meters.
Multiple Eagles also placed second in their respective events: sophomore Hailey Rios in the 300-dash with a time of 40.96; Dowdell in the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.14; and junior Nate Slater in the men’s 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:26.35.
Finally, the following Eagles placed third in their respective events: sophomore Kara Fields in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.98; senior Kelsey Kinsley in the women’s shot put, throwing 13.64 meters; fifth-year Chris Graber in the men’s long jump, jumping 6.65 meters; sophomore Colton Thress in the men’s mile with a time of 4:16.81; fifth year Doniven Jackson in the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 21.96; sophomore Sidney Sheppert in the women’s triple jump, jumping 11.25 meters; junior Abby Wheeler in the women’s high jump, jumping 1.64 meters; Walker in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 25.06; sophomore Allie Dunlap in the women’s pole vault with 3.55 meters; and the men’s 4×400 relay team consisting of senior Noah Wood, junior Derrick Amapps, senior Ethan Schuster, and Thress with a time of 3:18.30.
The Eagles look to continue their success next week at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Indiana Friday Jan. 31 and Saturday Feb.1.
