The Ashland Women’s Basketball team went head-to-head with a struggling Lake Erie team at Kate’s Gymnasium Saturday Jan. 25.
Lake Erie was looking to capture an upset and their first ever win against Ashland in program history.
The game opened with a comfortable 7-2 lead two minutes into the game after a three-pointer by senior guard Morgan Yoder. But Lake Erie hung in there and only trailed by three halfway through the first quarter
Ashland stayed strong and took an 18-11 lead heading into the second quarter. Lake Erie was able to keep their deficit to single digits and be within striking distance of the Eagles for most of the second quarter. But Ashland would extend the lead to as much as 13 in the second quarter and end the half with a 31-20 lead.
Lake Erie never got back within striking distance and could feel their chances slipping away as the third quarter went by. Ashland only shot 9-28 from the field in the first half but followed it with 8-16 shooting in just the third quarter.
The lead was now 49-28 at the end of the third and all Ashland had to do was continue to keep their defense solid and they would win their 12th straight game. And that’s exactly what they did on their way to a 65-43 win against another Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opponent.
Five different players scored in double digits for Ashland and leading the way was senior forward, Zoe Miller, with 13. Freshman guard, Ashley Mullet, led the backcourt with two three-pointers and 12 points. Three other players had ten points which included Yoder, senior forward Hayley Smith, and sophomore guard Gia Casalinova.
Ashland improves to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in the conference and will look to win their 13th straight game with their next contest on Thursday Jan. 30 at Ohio Dominican with tip off set for 5:30 p.m.
