The Ashland University women’s basketball team visited the Thomas More Saints this past Saturday Jan. 11.
After a slow start for both teams, which saw three turnovers in the first minute of action, Ashland gained some momentum that carried through the rest of the way. They outscored the Saints 19-11 in the first period.
Senior forward Zoe Miller continued her hot streak, scoring ten of her game high 17 points in the first quarter.
The Eagles kept it up in the second frame, holding the Saints to just six total points. Ashland scored 24 of their own, raining in nine of their 14 field goals, including six of eight triples. The two-way attack from Ashland gave them a 43-17 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, Ashland outscored the Saints 22-12 before head coach Kari Pickens went to her deeper reserves for the fourth quarter. The Eagles finished off the Saints 78-49 for their eighth consecutive victory.
Miller led the Eagles in points for the third game in a row. Miller scored 17 points on an efficient six for eight shooting, while also knocking down three of five from downtown. Miller also grabbed 12 of the Eagles’ 34 rebounds. Ashland had three others score in double figures, with senior forward Hayley Smith scoring 13, freshman guard Ashley Mullet with 12, and sophomore guard Lexi Howe with 11. Howe’s 11 may be the most encouraging, as she has been searching for a performance like this, coming off her injury to start the season.
Ashland moves to 14-3 on the season, on a 6-game winning streak within the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
The Eagles head back on the road for their next two games, with the Findlay Oilers up next on the schedule. The Eagles will tip off against the Oilers this Thursday, Jan. 16th at 5:30 pm.
