The Coburn Art Gallery’s November exhibit included powerful works by artist Eileen Woods. This collection of Woods’ work focused on addressing gun violence, and honoring individuals that have lost their lives to the act.
In the exhibit, “Death by Gun,” Woods created many detailed portraits of the victims, honoring each of their lives individually.
The idea came to Woods through frustration, “the tragedies I kept reading about, and I kept seeing people say, ‘that’s too bad,’ or ‘we should really do something,’ and nothing is ever done,” Woods explained.“So, all I could do was start looking at the victims individually, each person on his or her own, and give them some attention and love.”
Well over 100 victims of gun violence were honored through Woods’ artwork.
The talented artist used different techniques throughout the gallery, such as embroidery, wood burning, charcoal, and colored pencils.
“Maybe this is the only way to do it, just to look at that person, and think about that person in context of your own life,” said Woods.
“Just maybe then you’ll just get angry enough to try to do something, not just read it, and then forget about it.”
The “Death by Gun” gallery opened on Nov. 14 and will continue to be displayed through Dec. 12.
