On Monday, November 11, the Ashland University College Republicans, College Democrats and Kappa Sigma Fraternity hosted a Veteran’s Day Ceremony in the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel.
The ceremony started with the presentation of colors, the National Anthem sung by the Ashbrook student choir, and the Pledge of Allegiance by Madeline Pugh, political director of College Republicans.
Dr. Adam Carrington, associate professor of political science, led the ceremony attendees’ invocation.
“Thank you to the men and women of our country. With the day of decision ventured many civil and religious liberties we now enjoy,” Carrington said.
Kayin McDonald, the philanthropy chair of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, spoke on his chapter’s philanthropy and how it helps veterans.
“Today, we gather not only to celebrate but ensure that your sacrifices are remembered, respected, and honored,” McDonald said.
The chapter participated in Mile in a Soldier’s Shoes, which has been organized annually since 2015. Participants walk and run to raise money for homeless veterans.
McDonald explained that it’s not just about raising money; it’s about making connections and remembering the names and faces of the sacrifices veterans made and the heroes they are.
This year, they raised $5,000, which was donated to various veterans’ organizations.
“It’s a powerful tradition that unites our brothers, our campus and our community in support of veterans that need us most,” McDonald said.
Katelyn Meeks, vice president of College Republicans, introduced keynote speaker AU President Jon Peede.
Closing remarks by Theo Davis, a member of the College Democrats, along with the removal of the colors, and an ending benediction by Carrington.
