On Monday, November 11, various organizations came together to host a Veterans Day Ceremony on the campus of Ashland University.
The organizations that held this event were the College Democrats, the College Republicans, Kappa Sigma Fraternity and AU’s Veteran Center.
The ceremony began with a presentation of colors, the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance spoken and sung by various students apart from the organizations. AU’s Dr. Adam Carrington led the ceremony attendees’ invocation.
“Thank you to the men and women of our country with the day of decision ventured many civil and religious liberties we now enjoy,” Carrington said.
Senior Kayin McDonald, a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, spoke on his chapter’s philanthropy and how it resonated with Veterans.
“Today we gather not only to celebrate but ensure that your sacrifices are remembered, respected, and honored,” said McDonald.
The chapter has gotten to participate in Mile in a Soldier’s Shoes organized annually since 2015. They walk and run to raise money for veterans in need. He explained it’s not just about raising money it’s about making connections, remembering the names and faces of the sacrifices veterans made and the heroes they are. This year they raised $5,000 which is donated to various organizations for veterans.
“It’s a powerful tradition that unites our brothers, our campus and our community in support of veterans that need us most,” McDonald said.
The ceremony was followed by and introduction of keynote speaker President Peede by senior Katelyn Meeks, a speech by the university’s president himself, closing remarks by Theo Davis, a removal of the colors and an ending benediction by Carrington.
For future events on November 14, the United States Marine Corps is holding a tabling session in the Hawkins-Conard Student Center from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. They will be offering an opportunity to connect with them to learn more about their opportunities and leadership development.
