The Ashland University No. 5 women’s basketball team took on the Wayne State Warriors on Sunday Nov. 10 on the road in Detroit, Michigan.
The Eagles’ defense struggled behind the Warriors’ offense momentarily to open the game as the Warriors were able to shoot a three-pointer on the Eagles within the first minute of the game.
The Eagles made a quick turnaround only a minute later on the Warriors when Freshman Guard Ashley Mullet shot successfully from the three-point line tying the Eagles and Warriors 3-3 within the first few minutes of the game.
The Warriors Forward Taylor Thompson would attempt to respond to the Eagles three pointer with a layup; however, would ultimately miss.
The Warriors wouldn’t stop there. They’d make a turnaround with six minutes left in the quarter.
Warriors Forward Zamaria Polik would be successful in making a layup to create a 3-5 game, Eagles down two points.
The Eagles and Warriors continued battling one another through this first quarter; however, the victor for this quarter would be the Warriors with 15 points on the score board and the Eagles lagging behind with 11.
The Eagles entered the second quarter bouncing back from the previous loss of the first.
The Warriors led the quarter by scoring four more points within the first two minutes; however, the Eagles continued to score with hopes of surpassing the Warriors.
The Eagles surpassed the Warriors when Eagles Forward Hayley Smith successfully completed a layup three minutes into the quarter, allowing the Eagles to be up one to the Warriors 19.
The Eagles continued to put points on the board, along with the Warriors; however, the Eagles came out of the second quarter dominating over the Warriors, 31-26.
The Eagles kept the momentum going from the previous quarter, within the first two minutes of the quarter the Eagles put up seven points.
The quarter ended with Eagles Guard Morgan Yoder putting two points on board within the last ten seconds of the quarter.
The Eagles ended the third quarter going 57-39 with the Warriors.
The final quarter the Eagles entered the final quarter with 18 points over the Warriors.
The Eagles continued dominating over the Warriors for the entirety of the quarter, the final blow came from Eagles Forward Katelyn Harabedian during the last 30 seconds of the game.
The final score of the game is 73-53, Eagles winning.
The Eagles are at 3-1 making it their third consecutive victory of the early season.
Three Eagles finished scoring in the double digits: Hayley Smith (14 points), Morgan Yoder (12 points), and Zoe Miller (10 points).
The Eagles’ next game is the home opener at Sherrill Hudson Court at Kate’s Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. against Davenport University.
