The Ashland University football team’s win streak was snapped on Saturday Nov. 9 with a 24-10 loss to the Walsh Cavaliers.
Both teams went three and out on their opening drives, but the Cavaliers did find the scoreboard in the first quarter. On a 9-play, 77-yard drive Walsh running back Dante Walker found paydirt from one yard out. The Cavaliers led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Walsh made the contest a two-score game just seconds into the second frame with a 20 yard field goal by Trent Doerfler.
With the Eagles now down 10-0 the offense had a must respond drive to execute. Ashland did just that going right down the field in 7 plays capped off by a one yard Ty’aris Stevenson rushing touchdown. The Eagles were now down by three
The scoring would go quiet until halftime, and through most of the third quarter. With under five minutes left to go in the quarter Senior kicker AJ Rhodes split the uprights from 24 yards out to tie the game at 10.
Heading into the fourth quarter with the game tied, the often stout Eagle defense needed a stop with Walsh pinned back deep in their own territory. Instead of getting a stop, Ashland would give up a 91 yard touchdown pass from Cavaliers quarterback TC Molk to Garrett Waite. Walsh took a 17-10 lead with 12:45 left in the game.
The Eagles offense was shut down for almost all of the game including being held off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. Walsh would make their lead two scores in the final frame with another long touchdown pass this time on an 83 yard touchdown catch by Trey Martin with four minutes left.
The Cavaliers held on for the 14 point win. Ashland’s seven game win streak comes to an end, and the Eagles fall to 7-3 overall.
One final regular season game awaits the Eagles next week against Kentucky Wesleyan. It will be Senior Day at Jack Miller Stadium with kick off set for 1:00 p.m.
