From Bellefontaine and Triad High School in Ohio, Maison Johnson, also known as “that one guy” has always had his eyes set on being a part of Ashland University.
“I have a passion for teaching and Ashland has had a very good teaching program that I was able to get into, as well as my mother being an alum and the nickname came from my teammates,” Johnson said.
Along with his passion for teaching his love for video games came right along with wanting to be at Ashland.
“eSports has always been something I have enjoyed whether competing or spectating I just enjoy competing in the games I love,” Johnson said.
One of those games he plays is Super Smash Bros, which is a game with up to eight players from characters across the other Smash Bros game as well as new additions. The goal of the game is to send your opponent flying off the map with a combination of moves.
“My favorite game to play is super Smash Bros. Ultimate just cause of the fast gameplay and how fun it is,” Johnson said.
Johnson also spoke on what his goals are for the team this year.
“Overall, this season we are looking for improvement and the ability to work together on more of a fundamental standpoint, as well as pushing ourselves independently to be better competitors,” Johnson said.
Evan Norman, Johnson’s teammate, talked about how Johnson is a good leader and someone he likes to be around.
“Maison as a leader is someone who is there for his teammates and pushes us to be great,” Norman said. “I really enjoy being around him every day seeing him work hard makes me want to give it my all and play my game hard. I just want to learn as much as I can from him and as someone who is in Smash Bros with him, I love his leadership and what he brings to our team.”
The Ashland eSports Super Smash Bros team has gotten off to a good start over the past few weeks winning two games to zero against Davenport and playing well against a Shawnee State team.
The next matchup for the eSports Smash Bros team will be against Butler on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
