At the Oct. 15 Student Senate meeting, there were many important discussion points brought up, one of which being the fact that a few new clubs recently had their charters approved.
“Two organizations have had their charters approved: the AU Pickleball Club and the Italian Heritage Club.” said Sanjna Arora, senator Activities, Budget and Chartering. In addition to this, the Student Wellness Team is looking to join campus soon too, however its charter hasn’t yet been approved.
In addition to this, another point brought up was that Resolution 100824-01, which had been introduced by Freshman Class President Aidan Haggard in the past few weeks, was tabled for the foreseeable future.
The resolution, which proposed a reworking of the Ashland University student handbook in order to allow more open expression of messages on campus drawn with chalk, was ultimately put on hold indefinitely. The current student handbook rule says that any chalk messages on campus must be only in advertisement of pre-approved events, out of concern that offensive messages might be written.
The concern brought up by the resolution was that this restriction violated students’ First Amendment free speech protections. However, the resolution ultimately didn’t pass the Student Senate, which voted unanimously to table the resolution.
Student Senate meets every Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. in the ABCD Conference Room of the Student Center. To find more information about Student Senate as well as other organizations and events on campus, visit Engage Ashland, as well as follow its Instagram page @engage_ashland.
