The Ashland University men’s golf team finished their second invite of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
The team competed in Indianapolis, IN at the UIndy Invitational alongside eight other teams.
After finishing sixth out of 13 teams at their last invite in Canton, OH, the team ended up just missing a top three finish by placing fourth out of nine teams at UIndy.
The team managed to beat teams such as Tiffin University, Northwood University, and the hosting college University of Indy.
Although the team placed sixth, they managed to pull out a team score of 846 – the lowest in program history since 1196-97.
Another monumental moment was made as Senior Matthew McMullen not only won the event at 15-under making it his first collegiate victory, but also broke former Eagle Andrew Kolar’s 54-hole individual low for men’s golf.
“The key to success for this tournament was to hit as many greens as possible and put myself in positions to make putts,” McMullen said.
Even though McMullen states that golf is a “rollercoaster of a sport,” and that it is hard to be on the top of the leaderboard for two tournaments, he feels confident in his game.
“Golf is a game of consistency and if I can stay consistent to my practice routine, my thought process, and my swing thoughts I believe I can carry over my play from this last tournament to our next,” McMullen said.
Other finishes from the Eagle team were first-year student Charlie Fish tying for 11th with 6 under par and junior Carter Mishler also tying for 18th place with a score of 4 under par.
“I believe my team is doing everything they can to be the best,” McMullen stated. “I think golf is a game of fate and I believe that our time is coming.”
The Eagles will see if their time has come in their next invitational at the Motor City Shakedown being hosted by Wayne State. This invite will be from Monday, Sept. 30th through Oct. 1st.
