TKE house fire under investigation
December 4, 2015
Around 1 a.m. Nov. 16, 2015, a small fire occurred in a hallway of the TKE house. According to Assistant Fire Chief Ron workman, the fire was out by the time the fire department arrived at the scene, but two scorch marks were left in the upstairs residence hallway where the fire had been. Mitchell Laing, the president elect of TKE for the upcoming semester said that most of the chapter was already in bed when they heard some yelling from the hallway and the fire alarm. They saw some smoke and quickly evacuated. Safety and the fire department both did rounds to make sure the house was safe for men to go back inside. Workman commended the men for evacuating the building correctly and said that all of campus should follow suit.
“A lot of times students in other dorm buildings will stay in their rooms thinking it is a false alarm,” said Workman. “I just want to stress how important it is to evacuate the building when the alarm goes off.”
The acting president of the time Byron Reyna-Corzo joked that his mix tape was the cause of the fire but said that in all seriousness the cause of the fire is still unknown.
“Basically from what we’ve gathered there were just some loud thuds out in the hallway and then some members popped out [of their rooms] and saw that there was some sort of cloth on fire and they put those out.” Said Reyna-Corzo. “We don’t really know how it happened or what started it. Internally we are doing an investigation but it just kind of seems like one of those things that just kind of happens.”
Workman said that the fire department is also investigating the cause of the fire.
