Hede: Rushing Until It’s No Fun Have you ever heard of the country band Alabama?
Most individuals past a certain age have not heard of it at all.
Alabama used to be a famous country music band in the 1980s. A few of their songs are still played regularly today and the band has considerable influence on multiple country artists today.
So why am I randomly mentioning an old country band?
Because one of its songs, which is “I’m In a Hurry (And I Don’t Know Why).”
During the summer I listened to this song quite often while I was working at my internship since it was on the group playlist.
Each time I heard the song, I always found myself thinking about it more.
The lyrics of the song are not anything stellar or complex. They are plain and simple.
But there is one line of the song that always stuck to me.
“Oh, I rush, and I rush until life’s no fun.”
I always think about that line in the song.
Have you ever been so busy or overwhelmed that certain things you like to do become not enjoyable anymore? Whether it is school, sports, activities, etc. The list could go on.
Since my first year of college, I have felt this a time or a few. Whether it is doing my job for The Collegian or my other responsibilities and obligations outside of the classroom.
It became unenjoyable. I was tempted to admit defeat because I was rushing everywhere, and moments became no fun.
I was doing lots of different tasks, and I barely had time to myself to enjoy life.
But I decided eventually to hit the pause button.
I took some time to myself and did something I enjoyed, talked to friends and family or I went on a walk to clear my mind.
And what I realized was that I came back about ten times more energized than I had ever felt before.
I was excited to perform my tasks and duties once again with a renewed spirit.
To all the first-year students coming to the campus of Ashland University, like the Alabama song line, do not rush until it is no fun.
Take some time to yourself. Each day, I make it a priority to take a little bit of time to myself to be able to come back better than before.
While it seems simple to do at college, it is not because one can easily get caught up in college life and get busy quickly, one might not even know where the time went.
Take the moments in, take a deep breath, and enjoy the next four years because some of the best memories will be made, the highest of highs and lowest of lows will occur and some of the best people one will ever meet will happen.
I know from experience.
Trust me.
But just remember, do not rush until it is no fun.
