The Ashland Eagles men and women’s indoor track and field teams put up a showing this past weekend at the Tiffin Dragon Open with two automatic qualifiers and 23 provisional qualifying efforts for the 2016 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships
Seniors Jamie Sindelar and Jordan Crayon qualified for the meet.
Crayon had the second-best men’s shot put in Division II this season, throwing for 21.09 meters.
Sindelar also has the best Division II women’s shot put after throwing the winning distance at Tiffin of 16.57 meters, improving her national’s qualifying mark. Redshirt freshman Kala Strong came in right behind her with a distance of 14.25-meters.
In the weighted throw Sindelar won the event with junior Megan Tomei and redshirt freshman Mackenzie Leigh finishing fourth and tenth respectively
Junior Marlecia Holston won the triple jump and took second in the long jump while senior Megan Cunningham won the pole vault.
Senior Lauren Ellsworth also found some success for the Eagles, as she was once again a big winner in three different events.
Ellsworth took the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.64, the 200 meters with a time of 25.29, and was also a part of the winning 4×400 relay squad, consisting of junior Nuri Lee and sophomores Haley Gregory and Irene Skinner, with a time of 4:02.03.
Skinner also won the 400-meters with a time of 59.07 and Gregory took the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.91
Seniors Megan Roessler and Emma Daugherty took first and second in the 3,000-meter run with Roessler taking first with a time of 11:04.92 and Daugherty taking second with a time of 11:17.28.
On the men’s side, senior Eric Thompkins completed the 60-meter dash sweep for AU by winning in a time of 6.99 and also took second in the 200-meters
Junior Tommy Menyes won the 3,000 run in a time of 9:04.21.
“I thought we did a good job of stepping up the intensity through finals and through the remainder of the meet,” said sprint coach Ernie Clark. “Even through a timing malfunction that set the meet back quite a ways, athletes maintained a high level of intensity and competitiveness the remainder of the day.
The Eagles will split this next weekend with a select few amount of athletes going to Penn Nationals at Penn State and the rest of the team going to the Findlay Open.
