Eagles advance to 20-0 after victory over Dragons
January 30, 2016
Continuing what is currently the second longest winning streak in Ashland University’s women’s basketball history, the team continues to hold their undefeated record at 20-0 after defeating the Tiffin Dragons 68-55 this afternoon.
This year’s team only trails the national championship team from 2012-2013, who went on a 24-game winning streak in their road towards the finals.
AU was able to pull out the win, improve their record and remain three games ahead of Michigan Tech in the overall GLIAC standings and four games ahead of Ohio Dominican in the South Division.
Despite their slower start, the Eagles did not overlook the Dragon’s record, 5-14 and 3-11 in the conference.
The Eagles dominated throughout the first quarter, leading by 13-points going into the second quarter.
“Our offense in the first quarter was really good,” said head coach Robyn Fralick. “We pushed, we had early ball movement and we got good looks. The only issue was that we were letting them score much too.”
In a successful attempt to slow the Eagles down, the Dragons went on a 19-7 run turning the score to 29-28 with about five minutes left in the first half.
“Tiffin shot it really well,” said Fralick. “They are a good three-point shooting team and they got some good looks, but I was proud of the kids for stringing some good possessions and finding a way to win.
Luckily for the Eagles, the Dragons failed to score the rest of the half, giving AU some breathing room as they went into half time leading 33-28.
“It has been a theme for us the past few weeks of just playing consistent defense,” said sophomore Laina Snyder. “When we are not scoring we want to make up for it on defense, but we were not doing that and it showed. But coming out again and playing to the best of our ability and running on them helped us out a lot.”
The second half went in favor of the Eagles, who continued to take the lead 43-33 and never allowed the Dragons to get within seven points for the remainder of the game.
Snyder got some game highs for the Eagles with 20 points and 12 rebounds. These numbers allowed her to get her 22nd career double-double.
Junior Alex Henning and senior McKenzie Miller also added ten points to the scoreboard while Henning collected six assists and four steals for the victory.
The Dragons turned the ball over 19 times throughout the game allowing the Eagles to take advantage of their mistake turning those turnovers into 16 points.
“Our biggest focus was discipline,” said Fralick. “We know Tiffin, especially lately, has been playing really well and we needed to have discipline to make sure every possession gets taken care of.”
The Eagles will not have much time off. They will face Lake Erie away at 5:30 on Monday and will look to face both Walsh and Malone this weekend.
