As Eagles continue to win, Fralick’s legacy continues to grow
February 2, 2016
As the Ashland University Women’s Basketball team continues to win games, their elusive winning streak continues to grow. Now at 21-0 overall, the Eagles haven’t lost a game since March 16th of 2015, when they were defeated by Lewis University 83-76, during their NCAA Midwest Regional Final.
In regular season play, the Eagles haven’t lost since February 12th, 2015 when they were beat 74-72 by Findlay University.
The Eagle’s 21-0 start to this season is their best since the 2012-13 NCAA Division II national championship team won its first 24 contests.
Ashland came into Monday’s game as one of three undefeated women’s basketball teams in Division II, and with the nation’s longest current winning streak.
Even more impressive, the Eagles are 135-21in their last 156 games, good for a .865 winning percentage.
In her first season as head coach, eighth overall with the team, Robyn Fralick has accomplished something through her first 21 games as head coach that many coaches could never dream of doing.
Being undefeated through the first 21 games of your head coaching career is quite the feat in college basketball, especially in NCAA Women’s Basketball.
While there is no official record kept in NCAA Women’s Basketball, tree have plenty around the AU campus that have their own “unofficial” research this past week, myself included.
According to unofficial research done by Joe Carmany, Assistant Athletics a Communications Director at Liberty University, the NCAA Division II record for most consecutive wins to start a head coaching career belonged to Taylor Wagner of Colorado Mesa University who started his coaching career at 18-0 during the 2012-2013 season.
Fralick and the Eagles improved to 18-0 last week when they beat Wayne State in double overtime 92-82. Unofficially, Fralick holds the NCAA Division II record for consecutive wins to start a head coaching career and the number continues to grow.
While the undefeated feat to start her career is impressive, Fralick’s coaching and dedication to her team is why this team is 21-0. Sure, it would be nice to say that Fralick owns the record for best starting to a coaching career in NCAA Division II, but at the end of the day, why does it matter?
This is team is poised for something special regardless of what team beats them. The Eagles will try and continue their undefeated streak this Saturday when they play Malone.
