On Wednesday, Jan. 31, Ashland University’s Safety Services Department released a statement to students, faculty, staff and parents about recent fraudulent phone calls.
With concerns starting to arise from parents and students alike on the matter, both the AU Safety Services and Public Relations Departments have been on top of the situation.
“Please be aware that parents of AU students have been contacted by someone identifying himself as Safety Services. The caller indicates that the student has been caught drinking on campus and needs money to be sent,” said the Public Relations and Safety Service Departments via AU students’ email accounts. “These calls are not from Ashland University. Do not respond to the call. We are currently investigating the situation.”
The Collegian reached out to the Director of Safety Services Dave McLaughlin for a statement on the matter.
“The source of the calls is unknown at this time,” said McLaughlin. “At this point, all we can do is give students a heads-up regarding the calls so they may share the information with their contacts. I.T and others have been notified to render assistance on mitigating the impact to students.”
The AU Safety Services Department is currently monitoring the situation and is in contact with the AU I.T. Department to resolve the matter.
