“Thank you for coming to my TED Talk”, is a popular phrase inspired by public speakers who speak at a recorded presentation otherwise known as a TED Talk.
On Tues Feb. 13, AU students, staff, alumni, and the public will hear that phrase in person when the Center for Innovation and Teaching Excellence hosts its first ever TEDxAshland University event.
The theme of this event is “Sparking Connections”, and it is said to be an opportunity to bring the student body together as a whole.
“One of the main motivations for us to do this was to have a chance to bring the whole community together to share an experience that we hoped would connect and inspire us. I think we will do that,” said Elise Riggle, Director of the Center for Innovation, Teaching Experience, and Instructional Design Services.
In December, students were encouraged to apply to be a speaker at the event if they had any thought-provoking idea or concept that they believe shake the way we think or that needs to be shared.
A small committee reviewed all of the submissions presented and chose the speakers based on the relevance to the theme, and any potential impact the proposed talk could have on an audience.
“Everyone is so busy and moving in 100 different directions, we thought if we could find something that already had name recognition (like TED) and loosely build the theme around kindness and our interconnectivity, and get people to show up, we might really have something special,” said Riggle.
Depending on the success of this year’s event, the Center would make this a yearly thing.
