Eagles take another win over the Panthers
February 19, 2016
The Ashland University women’s basketball team added another win to their record, although not as easily.
The Eagles struggled to shoot as they faced Ohio Dominican last night and although they came out with a win, 74-65, the Panthers really put them to the test.
“It was a wild game,” said head coach Robyn Fralick. “It was a game of a lot of different momentum swings and our forth quarter was great, which gave us the ability to win that game. Even when they were down, you could feel the girl’s belief that they should win the game.”
The Eagles trailed in the third quarter 49-34 before going on a 30-6 run to take the victory.
This deficit seemed too similar for the Eagles, having been in a similar position two weeks ago as they trailed by 19 points in the third quarter against the Walsh Cavaliers, although they were unable to come back from it.
These points were due to a number of Eagles, although was led by sophomore forward Laina Snyder with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
“Laina had an electric second half,” said Fralick. “She is a winner and you can see when the game is close or in question, she plays like she is going to win. There is just that intangible factor about her that you can’t teach. It’s hard to explain but I am glad she has got it and that she is on our team.”
Right behind Snyder were her classmates, forwards Andi Daugherty who added 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals of her own, and Julie Worley with ten points and six rebounds.
Freshman Maddie Dackin contributed off the bench for the Eagles with her career high of 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
“Maddie was dynamic and she is very prepared,” said Fralick. “She has a toughness to her and she will get in the mix and make plays that we really needed. She played great and it was good to see that happen for her last night.”
After their victory last week, the Eagles were named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champions, the South Division Champions, and earned the number one spot in the Division II Midwest Region rankings.
“It is a unique time to know we won with games left because we know there is still work to do, but we have to celebrate it,” said Fralick. “It is the third in school history to win the GLIAC outright and we have to savor it, but it is just another step in the journey.”
The Eagles will continue their GLIAC play on the road as they look to face the Tiffin Dragons on Saturday at 1 p.m. before hosting their final home game of the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 25 versus Lake Erie College. The Dragons are 7-18 overall and 5-15 in the GLIAC.
