After Day 2 of the GLIAC Championships in Waterford Township, Michigan, the Ashland University Swimming and Diving remain in the top ten among the conference teams.

The women maintained their sixth place spot in the tournament, while the men, who were in sixth place after Day 1, moved down to eighth.

The Eagles are only half way through the meet and with two more days to go, the team has time to continue to move up the ranks.

Day 1 of the meet saw senior Hannah Mattar take fifth in the women’s 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.12. Her time was a NCAA championship provisional mark.

Along side the success with Mattar was senior Kaylyn Murphy, who made it to the finals of the women’s 50-freestyle. Murphy ended up with a bronze medal after finishing in a three-way tie.

A women’s squad of seniors Megan Schultz, Paige Martin, Mattar and freshman Julia Grady placed seventh in the 200 medley relay and on the men’s side, the relay team of senior Sergio Sanchis Peris, junior Greg Walters, and freshman Keegan Goeke and Ben Keilholz, took third place in the 200-medley.

Sanchis Peris also placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle competition for the Eagles.

As the team headed into day two of the tournament, they saw more athletes make it to the podium.

Once again, Mattar placed high in her race, finishing fourth in the 400-yard individual medley. Finishing with the time of 4:30.57 allowed her to claim the ninth quickest time in the country.

Once again, the team of Schultz, Martin, Mattar and Grady gave the Eagles a bronze medal for the 200 freestyle relay.

The men’s relay team also found success as junior John Scalli, Sophomore Joshua Nixon, Keilholz and Sanchis Peris touched fourth for the 200 free relay.

Individually on the men’s side, Chis Georgiadis placed tenth in the men’s 200 IM, clocking in at 4:07.63.

The Eagles return to the pool this afternoon for Day 3 of the competition.
