Eagles fly at Findlay, Grand Valley State Meets

Two new provisional marks were set as the Ashland University Eagles men and women’s indoor track and field teams were split between the Findlay Elite meet an the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday.

The new marks were set by junior Marlecia Holston in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 11.97 meters and the women’s 4×400 relay compiled of sophomore Haley Gregory, senior Lauren Ellsworth, junior Tiarra Kick and sophomore Irene Skinner. The ladies placed seventh in the event with a time of 3:51.31 at Grand Valley.

“It’s a great feeling to get the time,” said Ellsworth. “We’re just looking to improve going forward.”

Going into the race, Ellsworth and the other members of the relay were confident that they could get the mark.

“Each race is a chance to get the relay on the list,” said Ellsworth. “We always go into a meet with the mindset of getting onto the list so to get it was really special.”

At Findlay, there were five improved provisional marks as well as an improved automatic mark.

Junior Megan Tomei and senior Jamie Sindelar finished second and third in the women’s shot put while redshirt freshman Natalie Helenthal finished second in another division of the event. Tomei also place second in the shot put.

In the men’s shot put, senior Jared Whitcomb took the gold with an improved provisional mark of 17.11 meters. He and his teammate, sophomore Clayton Jury, took first and second in the men’s weight throw as well.

Junior Jordan Crayon finished third in the weight throw and improved his automatic mark with a distance of 21.84 meters.

Junior Nuri Lee, sophomore Lydia Ott and junior Sam Birchall swept the top three spots in the women’s 400-meter dash. Lee also added a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 11.36 meters.

In the men’s long jump, freshman Devin Snowden and junior Damani Barnes took first and second with marks of 6.65 meters and 6.60 meters respectively.

The women’s 4×400 relays finished first and second to cap off a great meet with times of 4:16.68 and 4:20.53 respectively.

The Eagles next compete at the Kent Tune Up meet at Kent State University next weekend to cap off the regular season before they head off to their conference meet in Tiffin on February 27 and 28.
