Wrestling falls to Findlay after tiebreaker
February 4, 2016
Some questions still remain after the Eagle’s matchup with the Findlay Roughnecks last night.
The match concluded with both teams possessing a final score of 16. Officials brought out the rulebook and decided upon the third tiebreaker scenario concluding that Findlay would get the win.
The first NCAA tiebreaker looks at greatest number of match victories, which were even between the teams at 5-5.
The second tiebreaker then compares the total number of falls, forfeits, defaults and disqualifications. This scenario did not break the tie either.
The third tiebreaker is total number of points scored between the two teams. Findlay broke the tie in this category, leading Ashland 45-38. One point was added to the team’s score, and Findlay was declared the winner, 17-16.
Despite falling to the Roughnecks, redshirt freshman Sebastian Vidika gave the Eagles a strong start, defeating Findlay’s Mike Stewart in a 7-6 decision.
Freshman Jerry Fenner III followed in his lead, winning in a 3-2 decision over Devin Rogers in the 133-weight class.
The next four victories were taken by Findlay, although were put to a halt as Ashland’s Jordan Murphy won in a 5-3 decision, taking down Findlay’s Alonzo Turner.
Still ranked third in the country in the 197-weight class, senior Joe Brant took a 13-5 major decision versus Dalton Ishmael. This victory gave Brant his 12th consecutive win.
Closing the match was senior Nigel Cross who defeated his opponent Luke Flemming in a 3-2 decision.
The Eagles will be back at home for their last home dual on Feb. 12. They will matchup with the Tiffin Dragons for their Senior Night celebration at 7 p.m.
