Art Department holds Art Saturday: Design your own skateboard

Anything that is designed by kids is always special and unique, and uniqueness means precious and appealing. For all tweens and teens ages 10 to 17 in Ashland, there was a great opportunity to paint and decorate their own skateboard deck at Ashland University last Saturday, Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

According to AU’s news release, the skateboard class was called “Art Saturday” and AU’s Coburn Gallery and Art Club held the event. Students and faculty who had been preparing for the event were looking forward to giving teenagers a chance to relax and create their own skateboard.

The goal of the program was to offer kids and teenagers an opportunity to learn the fun facts and background of skateboards in American culture.

“We already had 20 kids registered for the class and I hope our class sizes were good,” said Cynthia Petry, director of the Coburn Gallery. “We are actually the only one department in Ashland that has an ‘Art Saturday’ program.”

Petry also pointed out that staff member from the Gallery has taught the lessons and some students from Fine Arts also volunteered to teach. For these students majoring in Fine Arts, they surely had a great time teaching the kids and watching them to make something creative.
