Mattar places 10th at NCAA Championships
March 14, 2016
Senior All-American Hannah Mattar finished her career with Ashland University on a high note as she placed tenth in the women’s 200 breaststroke at the 2016 Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.
Mattar touched the wall in her best time for the weekend, 2:16.16 in the finals.
Earlier in the meet, Mattar placed 12th in the individual medley and 19th in the 400 IM.
Mattar was the only athlete from AU to compete at the NCAA Championship and earned an overall of 12 team points at the championships, giving the Eagles a 35th place finish.
“I had a lot of really high goals and high expectations from last year and I did not finish exactly where I wanted to be,” said Mattar. “But it was amazing to see all the support even though I was the only swimmer from AU there. Even other teams from the GLIAC were taking me under their wings because I did not have a team there.”
Mattar completed her career as a seven-time All-American at AU. Along with holding those titles, she also possesses four individual records for the school in the 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 breaststroke and 200-butterfly.
“I wish it could have gone better as the last meet of my career for AU but overall I cannot base my whole career off of one meet,” said Mattar. “I had a lot of successes throughout my years at AU and I would have done it the same every time if I had the chance to redo it.”
Mattar is graduating in May with a degree in Hospitality Management and will take a break from swimming for a while, although after only one day, already misses the sport she has been competing in since she was five years old.
“I really miss it already and I am so grateful to God that I was able to swim for AU and that somehow I magically ended up here,” said Mattar. “I am honored that I was able to represent Ashland the past four years.”
The Swimming and Diving team has completed their 2015-2016 season and will look forward to winter 2016 when they will gear up again.
