Eagles dominate Yellow Jackets

Things can change significantly from game-to-game in baseball.

Two days after struggling to push one run across the plate, Ashland University’s bats erupted Tuesday afternoon at Donges Field for 20 hits and 26 runs.

The offensive explosion led to AU (9-8) earning a 26-2 victory over Cedarville University (3-10).

The 26 runs scored by the Eagles are a season-high and marks the seventh time this season that the Eagles have scored double-digit runs.

“A lot of guys swung well today,” said AU manager John Schaly. “Hopefully this will be a day that will get us going. We have to be more consistent with the bats. We’ve had days where you saw what we did with the bats. We just have to do it more often.”

The Yellow Jackets got on the board first in the game, plating a run in the top half of the first inning.

Ashland wasted no time responding. The Eagles pushed across ten runs in the bottom half of the frame, giving starting pitcher Pat Carlozzi plenty of run support.

Carlozzi pitched five innings of one run ball while allowing four hits and striking out four.

“It was good all around (pitching and defense),” said Carlozzi. “The fielding was good, so it’s easy to make pitches when you have good defense behind you.”

The Eagles continued to build upon their first inning lead by adding four runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings.

Nic Varda led the way offensively for the Eagles, going 4-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored.

Cameron Nunn also had a big day at the plate for the Eagles, hitting the team’s third home run of the season. He added four RBIs and scored three runs.

“I’m just going out there and making the most out of every opportunity that I have and playing to the best of my ability,” said Nunn.

Thirteen Eagles had hits in the game while five Eagles had a multi-hit day at the plate.

Next for Ashland is a home doubleheader on Thursday versus Ohio Dominican (11-3-1). The Panthers are winners of six out of their last seven games.
