After a slow start to their season following their spring tournament in Clermont, Florida, the Ashland University Softball team has broken their three game losing streak with a sweep against the Malone Pioneers.

The Eagles went 3-0 in the first game and 10-2 in the five innings of the second game of their doubleheader with the Pioneers.

These two wins allow the Eagles to improve their overall record to 12-13 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC. The team went 1-1 with Grand Valley State and 0-2 with Ferris State over Easter weekend.

Sophomore third baseman Marissa Caraballo kicked off the bottom of the second inning putting the Eagles on the board with her RBI double. The team’s next two runs took place in the fifth inning on back-to-back errors by Malone.

Senior lefty Sarah Alley threw a three hit shutout from the mound, striking out five and only walking two to improve her personal record to 5-5.

In the second game, Malone was able to score twice in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles responded with two runs of their own in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by sophomore pinch-hitter Sadie Cunningham and an RBI single by junior center fielder Ally Farrah.

The Eagles took the lead in the top of the third with another single RBI by junior second baseman Kalene Freshour followed by a RBI double by Caraballo. Junior shortstop Alexis Van Horn also game the Eagles another RBI.

Senior first baseman Jen Moore got her fifth homerun of the season, hitting a three run ball over the fence.

Senior Brittany Flanigan threw for two and 1/3 innings and improved her record to 5-3 after pitching scoreless innings.

Ashland will host their next game on their home field, Brookside Park, today at 4 p.m. The non-conference double-header is against the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines.
