March 28, 2016
The track and field season has taken things outside now but that hasn’t put a hamper on the Ashland University Eagles from starting off well.
There were two automatic qualifying cuts for nationals and 11 provisional marks set as the Eagles competed at the Adidas Winthrop Invitational and the Raleigh Relays meet.
On the men’s side, seven of the weight throwers took the top nine spots in the event. Junior Jordan Crayon, fresh off an NCAA Division II title in the indoor weight throw, won the event with an automatic qualifying mark of 66.88 meters.
Fellow juniors Bryn Campbell and Clayton Jury helped secure the podium sweep for the Eagles in the weight throw with provisional marks as well.
For the women, senior Jamie Sindelar won the women’s shot put with a new meet record of 16.10 meters, which also was an automatic nationals qualifying mark.
Junior Megan Tomei finished third in the event with a provisional mark of 13.96 meters while also securing a provisional mark in the women’s hammer throw.
Redshirt freshmen Mackenzie Leigh and Natalie Helenthal also set new provisional marks in the hammer throw.
Sophomore Elijah Talk won the men’s shot put with a provisional mark of 16.55 meters.
At Raleigh, the Eagles turned in three provisional marks. Senior David Knack led the way by turning in the fastest 10,000 meter run in the country right now with a 29:41.74.
Freshman Brandon Wilson scored a provisional time in the 100-meters with a time of 10.61 and sophomore Irene Skinner completed the sweep with a provisional mark in the women’s 400-meters with a time of 55.95.
On the second day of competition, junior Jason Zahn earned a new provisional mark in the men’s discus with a distance of 54.82 meters to win the event. Jury finished right behind him with a second place finish in the event.
The Eagles will compete next in the Wooster Invitational from April 1-2.
