The Ashland University women’s soccer team has started to turn heads in the NCAA Division II scene as the United Soccer Coaches (USC) has recognized the Eagles as a top 25 team in the nation.
The first list ranking of the year placed the Eagles at a No. 16 spot.
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the poll was released by the USC as they were given great praise due to their stellar play to start the season in non-conference play. The Eagles took on the No. 8 ranked Grand Valley State to start the season on the road, toppling them 1-0 after an own goal gave the Eagles an edge on the win.
Just a few days later they took on Rollins College, who they fell to in the 2022 season, in a 2-0 affair at home. The Eagles were led by midfielder Merrik Mihalek and forward Dani Hicks.
The Eagles also received star efforts from goalkeeper Mackenzie Simon, who was recognized with a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week award after two shutout performances.
Prior to this most recent ranking, they were receiving votes in the preseason polls.
The Eagles will next gear up to take on Saginaw Valley State at home, who are also undefeated, on Friday, Sept. 8 with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
