Eagles sweep the Storm
April 14, 2016
The Ashland University baseball team took care of business in a home Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Donges Field, defeating Lake Erie, 15-5 and 14-7.
In Game 1, the Storm (9-18, 5-7 GLIAC) started off the scoring in the top of the first inning via a Lucas Raley RBI double. The Eagles (18-11, 9-1 GLIAC) wasted no time responding, plating three in the first inning and five in the second.
Eagles starting pitcher Brandyn Sittinger (6-0) settled down after the first inning, pitching three consecutive scoreless innings before being taken out of the game after the fourth inning. Sittinger struck out six, allowed the solo run and walked one in the win.
Ashland scored three more runs in the fourth inning and four in the sixth to finish off their offensive clinic. The Eagles had 17 hits in the game.
J.P. Sorma led the way offensively for Ashland, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and three runs scored. Mackenzie Hampshire also had a big day at the plate for the Eagles, knocking in three runs.
In a shortened Game 2 due to darkness, Ashland scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to race out to another quick start.
That was all the run support that starting pitcher Chris Slavik (2-1) would need. Slavik pitched four innings of two run baseball, surrendering four hits and striking out three in the victory.
Ashland’s offense finished off its scoring by plating one in the third inning, two in the fourth and seven in the sixth.
Sorma scored three runs and hit a grand slam to lead AU’s offense again. Adam Vasil also offered a solid contribution for the Eagles, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
As a team, AU smacked 16 hits.
Next for the Eagles is a four-game weekend series at Hillsdale (20-10, 8-4 GLIAC) starting on April 16. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
