The Ashland University baseball team went 3-1 in their series with the Malone Pioneers over the weekend.

After some schedule changes were made due to the weather, the team opened the series with a double header on Friday.

The first game set the tone for the rest of the series ending with junior Lance Myer’s walk-off home run allowing the Eagles to obtain the victory 4-3.

Myers went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while senior first baseman Mackenzie Hampshire went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

That same game saw senior Brandyn Sittinger improve to 9-0. He allowed three unearned runs, three walks and struck out seven.

Game 2 of the day saw Malone take a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth before senior Nick Edwards’ two-run single gave the Eagles the lead and eventually a win over the pioneers 4-1.

Junior lefty Mike Gentile got his first win at home after six innings, allowing three hits, one run, three walks and struck out six.

Freshman Sam Rice earned his second save of the season with a three-inning shutout in relief. He allowed three hits and struck out six.

The Eagle’s game on Saturday did not only add another win to their record, it allowed the team to clinch their second straight season GLIAC South Division title spot for the 2016 GLIAC Tournament after their 4-1 victory.

The Eagles opened up Game 3 scoring three runs right off the bat.

Hampshire doubled in the game’s first run and sophomore third baseman and recent National Hitter of the Week followed hit a two-run homer.

Senior pitcher Jake Baldwin improved to 4-0 for the season and 22-2 for his AU career allowing one hit, one run, two walks and struck out four in only four innings.

Sophomore Luke Smith earned his first save of the season in the final three innings of one-hit relief.

Despite going into Sunday 3-0, the Eagles were not able to maintain a sweep of the Pioneers. The Eagles fell 12-3 in their final game with Malone.

Malone was able to set the tone early in the game with four runs in the top of the first.

The Eagles were able to score in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by senior right fielder Mike Lewandowski, then two more in the fourth on a two-run home run by Hampshire. Those runs made the score 4-3 in the Pioneers favor.

The Eagles were not able to get on the board again, as the Pioneers took over putting up three runs in the fifth, four in the seventh and one in the eighth.

The Eagle’s will return to the diamond tomorrow when they will face Tiffin in a double header, before continuing their six game road series at Findlay this coming weekend.
