Eagles amaze at Alumni Open

This past weekend, the Ashland University Eagles track and field teams competed at the fifth annual Ashland Alumni Open at Ferguson Field and came away with great results.

Senior thrower Jamie Sindelar threw the ninth-best throw in the shot put in Division II history behind former Eagle Adriane Blewitt Wilson, who holds the eight best throws in history, with a distance of 16.99 meters.

“It felt pretty good. All my throws in general felt pretty good,” said Sindelar to the Ashland University Athletic Department. “It felt like I was getting closer to throwing further. The Alumni meet is always a great meet. It’s always great to see alumni come back. It’s always just a great atmosphere. It’s a great experience every year.”

Coach Jud Logan was quick to echo those words but also said that the work is not done just yet.

“Jamie’s the No. 2 female shot putter in (Division II) history right now, and she’ll take that,” said Logan to the Ashland University Athletic Department. “She’ll be happy with that, but she doesn’t care about distance here in a couple weeks. She wants to throw 17 meters, but more than that, she wants a national title.”

Her teammate Megan Tomei finished in third place behind Sindelar with a distance of 15.27 meters, improving on her provisional mark.

Both teams swept the 4×100 relay with the women setting a new school record with a time of 46.35 while the men won in 40.54.

“The highlight of the meet for me today was the men’s and women’s 4×1,” said Logan to the Ashland University Athletic Department. “We feel like, if we had any (good) weather at all, it’s not even close, we are the fastest track in Ohio.”

Senior Lauren Ellsworth swept the sprint events by winning the 100 and 200 meters and freshman Myles Pringle also won the 200 meters with a time of 21.78.

In the men’s 100 meters, senior Eric Thompkins and freshman Brandon Wilson took second and third, separated by only two-hundredths of a second with Thompkins going a 10.82 compared to Wilson’s 10.84.

At the GINA Relays meet in Hillsdale, Michigan, senior Kylee Bernthisel broke her own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as well as securing a D-II provisional time with a time of 10:55.74.

Also there, senior David Knack earned a national provisional cut in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:06.56, finishing second in the event.

The Eagles will next compete at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships in Big Rapids, Michigan on May 4-6.
