Volleyball gets sweep at home

The Ashland University volleyball team celebrated back to back wins this weekend against two Michigan teams.

The Eagles were victorious against Michigan Tech on Friday night in the 3-2 win.

The first set brought a back and forth match between the Eagles and the Huskies. The Eagles took the set on a service error by the Huskies, winning 25-16.

The second set started off with the Huskies leading 2-0 against the Eagles. The Huskies took an 11 point lead over the Eagles before winning the set 25-14.

The third and fourth matches were back and forth between the two teams with Ashland taking the third set (25-17) and the Huskies taking the fourth (25-13).

In the fifth deciding match the Eagles come out aggressive after a small student crowd flooded into cheer on the team. The Eagles score the first three points which started a rally that won them the set 15-11.

Senior Alli Cudworth recorded 17 kills and 18 digs. Kayla Pfeiffer had 39 assists while Melanie Aguayo had 15 digs. Senior Casey Clark added 12 digs.

On Saturday’s game against Northern Michigan, the Eagles had another back and forth game.

In the first set of the night, Northern Michigan took it winning 25-23. The Eagles fought hard tieing the score multiple times before the Wildcats pulled ahead for the last two points.

The second set brought an Eagle win (25-17) after the Wildcats scored the first couple points before the Eagles took a four point lead.

In the third set the Eagles made a remarkable comeback to win the set 28-26 after the Eagles score the last three points of the set.

The fourth set went to the Wildcats after a ten point lead over the Eagles taking it 25-15.

In the fifth and final set, the Eagles score the first two points leading the way and setting the momentum for the set. Ashland was quick to not let the Wildcats score as they moved the score to 8-3 and quickly added another seven points to make the final score 15-7.

Alli Cudworth had 21 kills. Freshman outside hitter Shelby Woycik had a strong game with 10 kills along with teammates Reanne Neal and Jordan MacKay. Kayla Pfeiffer recorded 47 assists. Casey Clark added 24 digs as well.

The Eagles moved to 2-2 in the GLIAC and 8-5 overall. The Eagles will be back in action Tuesday against Tiffin before playing against Lake Superior Saturday and Saginaw Valley on Sunday.
